COLLABORATIONS IN INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS

Research in the field of AI & Law

FUNDED PROJECTS

2025 ETHICAL HUMAN-AI COCREATION METHODOLOGY
LIUC Grant for innovative teaching (funded 2000 €)
I co-wrote the research proposal and I am participating in the developing of the course “Artificial Intelligence and Law”

2023 REALM – Horizon Europe
Multistakeholder Board member as Independent Advisor on Ethical and Legal issues
The REALM project aims to create a collaborative framework for regulatory authorities, application developers, healthcare professionals, and policy officers to co-create and evaluate software for medical and healthcare use. We propose to create an inclusive platform leading to a transparent ecosystem for the evaluation and certification of software in healthcare where both the developers and the regulatory (and Health Technology Assessment) bodies have access to a standardized set of technology stacks and data. I receive no compensation for this role.

2023 AIRISE – Horizon Europe
Ethics & Privacy Consultant
The EU-funded ARISE project, recognizing the benefits of AI at the EU level, aims to develop a consortium that will assist SMEs in the effective and efficient development and commercial deployment of novel AI-based technologies for the manufacturing sector, specifically for AI-enabled applications at the edge. The project will mostly focus on technologies that help reduce emissions, waste, as well as carbon footprint. It will offer SMEs easily accessible AI expert help and guidance. I served as an Ethics and Privacy consultant for the completion of the first deliverable of the project.

2023 FAIR-ME-DATA Carlo Cattaneo University LIUC internal grant
PhD supervisor
The project proposal, submitted in October 2023, is a pilot to assess retrospectively the error rate in AI datasets in Italian hospitals on a small scale, in view of discovering biases, in collaboration with colleagues from the Health Management Department. In this project, prominent researchers will collaborate with me: Prof. Guido Noto La Diega; Prof. Dominika Harasimiuk, Dr. Elena Falletti, Dr. Sergio Alessandro Castagnetti.

2023 Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship – Horizon Europe (funded 188.590 €)

Supervisor Prof. Ugo Pagallo

2021-2022 ReMiDE – Regulating misinformation and disinformation: empirical evidences (funded
16.000 €)
P.I. Dr. Elena Falletti
In recent years, the theme of disinformation and misinformation has become increasingly important. The fast spreading of fake news on social media, together with the progress of technologies such as deep fake, which can be particularly deceptive, has become a threat for democracy. In this scenario, it is crucial to understand how institutions may act to stem the spreading of fake news or at least to reduce the negative impact on society. This project is aimed at finding empirical evidences to sustain recommendations for a change in legislation.

GRANT PROPOSAL COLLABORATIONS (not funded or pending)

2021 EXHALE – Horizon Europe Pathfinder Open proposal (submitted in 2021, rejected)
Beginning with an initial knowledge extraction phase, where we leverage meta-interpretative
logic synthesis to create rules from an opaque model, we intend to develop an architecture for building intelligent systems where humans and AIs form teams, able to learn from data but also to learn from each other by playing “serious games”, for a continuous improvement of the overall system.
WP Leader for Privacy, Legal and Ethics (50 person/months)

2021 Horizon Europe call HORIZON-CL4-2022-HUMAN-01-02: European Network of AI
Excellence Centres: Expanding the European AI lighthouse (RIA) (submitted in 2021, rejected)

Project about an optimal integration of AI-systems in every-day life work processes. I contributed to the writing of the proposal.

2021 COST Action Proposal OC-2021-1-25494 “Towards HYbrid Society humans-autonomous systems: the case of Patient Care” (rejected)

The scenario that we advocate in this interdisciplinary project is the “hybrid society”, where humans and autonomous agents are coupled at multiple levels, based on shared agreed-upon principles and standards constraining agents’ behavior.

2022 HORIZON-EIE-2022-SCALEUP-01-01 call (rejected)
Proposal for a project about innovating the health care sector
2022 You-Can-Play – YOUng diabetic patients’ ethical, PersonaLized support via a multi-
dimensional intelligent infrastructure (rejected)

HORIZON-HLTH-2022-STAYHLTH-01-two-stage (Staying healthy (Two stage – 2022) – submitted)
The YOU-CanPLay project is about an application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the healthcare field. The stakeholders of the envisaged system are diabetic children and pregnant women affected by type1 or other type of diabetes mellitus or insulin resistance, and their family and caregivers, and also their doctors.
